Trauma Lives in the Body: How to Gently Work Through It


What is personal trauma?
Personal (emotional) trauma is an individual's response to a lived experience that has left a deep imprint on their body, emotions, and mental state. Trauma can result from singular events (such as an accident or the loss of a loved one) or prolonged exposure to negative factors (like family stress or emotional and physical abuse). Trauma arises when an event overwhelms a person's ability to cope.
On a physical level, trauma often manifests as chronic muscle tension, disrupted breathing, and movement restrictions. The Feldenkrais Method and Hanna Somatics view the body as an integral part of our lived experience, offering movement practices and mindfulness techniques to help release the body and mind from the lingering effects of trauma.
How Does Trauma Harm an Individual? Trauma impacts all levels of a person’s being: physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual.

How Can Trauma Be Treated? Modern approaches to trauma treatment emphasize the importance of working with the body. Through embodied practices, individuals can restore mindfulness and "rewrite" traumatic experiences. Somatic exercises developed within the frameworks of Somatic Experiencing, Hanna Somatics, and the Feldenkrais Method are powerful tools for body-based healing. These body movement practices gently restore natural movement patterns, bringing back freedom and ease.

Individual sessions to work with unprocessed trauma
Sometimes the past stays with us longer than we would like.
A car accident, a medical procedure, the loss of a loved one, abuse, or relocation — these experiences can become “stuck” in the nervous system and keep showing up as anxiety, insomnia, body tension, or panic responses.
In an individual session, we create a safe and supportive space where you can:

— Help your body regain a sense of grounding and calm,
— Allow the nervous system to complete unfinished survival responses,
— Restore your inner resources and ease in moving forward.

What happens during a trauma healing session?
Somatic Experiencing® (SE) sessions are a collaborative and highly personalized process that unfolds at a pace that feels right for you.
Here’s what you can expect:
Grounding and Connection
We begin by creating a safe, supportive space — whether in person or online. You’ll be gently guided to settle into the present moment, grounding yourself in a way that feels comfortable and natural.
Gentle Exploration
Through conversation and mindful guidance, we explore how your body holds sensations, emotions, and patterns related to past experiences. You’ll be encouraged to notice subtle shifts in your body — without judgment or pressure.
Resourcing
Together we identify your personal “resources” — positive sensations, memories, or images that bring a sense of calm and support. These become tools that help you stay grounded and safe throughout the process.
Tracking Sensations
You’ll be guided to observe and track physical sensations such as tension, warmth, tingling, or movement. These sensations carry valuable information about how your body is processing trauma or stress.
Completion and Release
Step by step, in manageable doses, the body is invited to complete its natural responses — fight, flight, or freeze — that may have been interrupted in the past. This can show up as a shift in sensations, a spontaneous deep breath, or a wave of relaxation.
Integration
At the end of the session, we take time to reflect on what has emerged and to integrate the new awareness and changes.

Somatic Experiencing® is a gentle, non-invasive approach that does not require re-living traumatic memories. Instead, it focuses on the present moment and on what’s happening in your body right now. Each session is structured so that you feel safe and in control of the process.
You may begin to notice subtle physical or emotional changes — a sense of lightness, release, or calm. Over time, these shifts build greater connection with your body and a deeper sense of resilience.

How the body reacts to trauma and why it's important to work beyond just your thoughts
Many people come to therapy with the feeling: “I’ve already understood so much, processed so much, invested so much — so why won’t my body let go?” And it’s a fair question. Because trauma is not just a memory that can be acknowledged and released.
As modern neuropsychology and research in body-based therapies show, traumatic experience is imprinted not primarily in words, but in the body. When a person faces a threat — whether real or subjectively overwhelming — rational thinking switches off, and ancient automatic survival mechanisms take over. Fight, flight, freeze, submit, cry for help — these strategies are activated at the level of the nervous system If, at the moment of trauma, the survival response couldn’t be completed (for example, you couldn’t run away or call for help), the body can “get stuck” in that state.
The brain stays in survival mode, and the body remains ready for danger — even years later. That’s why symptoms often persist: chronic tension, anxiety, difficulties in relationships, bodily pain, panic, self-criticism.
Talk therapy alone may not be enough. The body needs a different language — sensations, movement, breath. Through gentle, mindful bodywork, it’s possible to gradually restore a sense of safety and stability, to allow yourself to feel and to live differently.

Avoiding emotional pain
Many people come to therapy hoping to get rid of emotional pain —
"I don't want to feel so angry,"
"I just want the tears to stop coming at the wrong moment."
But avoiding emotions is a vicious cycle.
We try not to feel → tension builds up → it becomes harder and harder to contain → we break down again and start blaming ourselves.
That’s how symptoms form:

insomnia.
One of my clients had been ashamed of crying for years. As soon as the tears came, she wiped them away, swallowed them down. When we began working through the body — gently noticing how her throat tightened, how tears rolled down her cheeks, and asking: “What are these tears really about?” — the process started to shift.
The tears came less often. They passed more quickly. Because emotions that are felt can move through us.
Emotions that are avoided get stuck and accumulate. To learn to "sit in the fire" means learning to tolerate discomfort — not run away or suppress it.
Difficult, painful emotions are a natural part of life. Allowing the full range of emotional experience is a skill.
And it can be learned — step by step, with support, first from a therapist, and then from yourself.
